Music is the heartbeat of this novel about the world of hometown musicians—the jamming venues, the contests, the onstage cues, the subtle rules. The story focuses on four musicians Carl Bradshaw, an aging Oklahoma fiddler; Amy Chandler, a young dumpling who can outpick most guitarists; Jack Martin, who lives in the shadow of a successful father; and Cora, an older woman on the edge of a world she believes can’t be hers. The novel’s structure reflects the sets of a performance on stage, with smaller sections that serve to introduce the musicians. Song titles, phrases, and sounds are part of the language, as are the characters’ styles in speaking about music, creating it, and performing it. With its winning evocation of the joy of playing together, The Universe Playing Strings will remind readers of the movies Once and Crazy Heart.

The Universe Playing Strings A Novel edition by R M Kinder Literature Fiction eBooks

R. M. Kinder has a gift for creating flawed characters who captivate the reader. Her use of language draws you in and makes ordinary lives seem extraordinary. My husband and several members of my family are part of the "home grown" musical scene that is full of jam-session camaraderie--a culture that can seem foreign if you are not a part of the community. However, R.M. captures the essence of this world with her prose, and makes the close-knit society accessible to the lay person. You do not have to be a musician to appreciate the lives of her characters or to see a part of yourself reflected in their honest, internal emotional struggles. I highly recommend this book.

The Universe Playing Strings A Novel edition by R M Kinder Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Kettle is a place where the four main characters, all musicians, unlock the secrets of their lives. Lyrical prose sets the stage in a place where "Music could have been holding the building together." Not only does music hold a building together, but it is the stage for Carl, Amy, Cora, and Jack to mingle with a community of folks seeking a connection with others by singing heart-felt lyrics and playing single notes that can stand alone. The author brings strength to this novel by allowing the reader to develop a caring for the characters. Her descriptions carry the rhythm of this novel with lines like "She wrapped herself in sound … She thought music even had a scent. She could breathe it in." Pain and joy teeter on the edge in the lives of musicians and their listeners attempting to connect dreams with reality. These elements find a way to make sense of being who we are and color who we hope to become when "listening to music and falling in love again" coincide.
Reading The Universe Playing Strings was akin to sitting in on a jam session with the author and her friends. The author engages the reader by gradually introducing characters in all their strengths and flaws, musicians drawn together by the inner drive to create. A patchwork of period terms and song titles create a sense of time and place at The Kettle, the place where musicians gather. One is tempted to put new strings on a fiddle and find a jam sessions like those so richly described in the novel. I read it slowly, trying to make the sensory pleasure last longer, making a list of the bluegrass and folk songs to practice between chapters. If you are looking to curl up with a good book on a rainy afternoon, The Universe Playing Strings by R.M. Kinder is a perfect choice.
I didn't want to say goodbye to the four main characters of this novel. Their musical story is richly woven into the fabric of their souls and erupts through their instruments. These ordinary people living mundane lives come together to play, laugh, love, sing and cry together through the journey of life. The author tells the story in a gentle way that captured my heart.
The local newspaper ran a favorable review... I downloaded the sample and appreciated the quality of the writing... I purchased the full novel and couldn't put it down. As a long-time musician and a fan of other Western US-focused writers such as Pam Houston, I found a lot to like in "The Universe Playing Strings." The characters have real depth. Their dual lives -- daytime jobs and nighttime gigs -- and their respective connections to their music, instruments, and fellow players (be they friends or rivals) ring true throughout. Ms. Kinder captures that high, lonesome sound in narrative form. Recommended.
This is a beautiful story with heart and soul. The strength of the book lies in the author's ability to show the flawed human being and make us love him. The characters fight a constant battle of life choices, doubt of self-worth, success, and love in the midst of the musician's world that stirs their blood. So carefully woven into the story is the impact one man has on the lives he touches. As he moves through his days as a musician, the reader experiences the common person's hope. Artistically sculpted prose draws the reader to reflect on special moments captured in memory by a unique lyric or rhythm. The story provides a connection to the characters and insists you pull for them because the author plants you in their shoes. This author has indeed shown us the universe playing strings and how the notes of life form us all. I would highly recommend this book.
